Recently Curacao Chess Federation (FEDAKO) held the Junior chess championship for the U12 (under age 12) category. The championship which took place at Sentro di bario Janwe counted with participation of 17 players. As expected again favorites were top talented players Frederic Simonis (age 9) and Avandrie Kastablank (age 10). Both players have demonstrated on various occasions to be relatively strong for their age. During their head to head match in the final round both players developed their pieces quickly and castling to protect their king. Nevertheless Frederic took the initiative launching an attack forcing Aviandrie to take on a defensive position. With not much insistence on the board Frederic ended the game with a combination leading to checkmate guaranteeing him complete victory of 5 out of 5. Aviandrie hereby took 2nd place on 4 points ranking higher on the tie-break leaving 3rd place for player Xavier Werleman with 4 points as well. Special stimul prizes went to Gilian Justiana, Jorjino Quirindongo and Alan Grey.
Overall the championship served as a good preparation and motivation for Frederic Simonis who will be participating in his first international tournament, the upcoming Carifta games to be held in Kingston Jamaica from April 14 to 17 along with 4 other players selected by FEDAKO. We look forward to Frederic and fellow players giving a great performance and representing Curacao at their best ability.
